In Florida, the nation's third-largest prison system is dangerously understaffed, leading to serious security issues.

That's the conclusion of a recent report conducted by independent consulting firm CGL, which found that many mandatory positions have been left unmanned for thousands of hours. As a result, fewer inmates are being searched, and use of force is increasing as guards struggle to maintain control. In January, for instance, prison officials admitted that they had been forced to fire warning shots and non-lethal pellets to keep order at a North Florida prison.

In the face of budget cuts and staffing shortages, workforce management software can add significant value. Available personnel can be easily reassigned to where they are needed most to maintain security.  Work position tools can be used to ensure that only qualified personnel are placed in key areas. And historical data can be used for analytics that support future staffing requirements.

Thanks for watching, and check back for more on how technology can be used to improve public safety workforce management.
