Prisons Must Balance Budget and Fatigue When Staffing Officers [Video]

State officials must always balance the need to stay on budget while avoiding burnout for their prison staffs.

A recent study from the Vermont Department of Corrections is once again bringing this dilemma into focus. Over the last six months, correctional officers at the state's seven prisons have worked an average of 11.6 hours of overtime for each two week pay period. This is a common issue for prisons, which need to be fully staffed at all times, regardless of tight budgets. Employee burnout is a factor, so officials must decide whether to keep the workforce small and pay overtime or hire new full-time staff. Workforce management software that includes staffing analytics can provide correctional leaders with data-driven insights that help minimize staffing concerns.

Thanks for watching and stay tuned for more updates about managing the public safety workforce.
